2008 Rules & Regulations

1. The Kanata Atom Ronald McDonald House Hockey Tournament is sanctioned by the ODMHA.

2. CHA official rules, ODMHA regulations and ODMHA code of discipline shall be applied.

3. This tournament is for Atom aged players playing at the “A”, "AA" and “B” levels.

4. All teams are guaranteed 3 games.

5. The Executive Committee of the Kanata Atom Ronald McDonald House Hockey Tournament determines the make up of the tournament annually.

6. The official team roster, including affiliate roster (if playing), signed by District Registrar, must be available during the tournament. Only players whose names appear on the players list provided on the registration form shall participate in the tournament. Proof of age and eligibility is the responsibility of every coach. ODMHA team lists, ODMHA Affiliation lists and/or birth certificates are to be available.

7. If it is discovered that a team has played an ineligible player, the team will be automatically disqualified. No refund will be given. The scheduled opponents of the disqualified team will be deemed to have won the game by a score of 1 to 0 with the goal coming at 9:59 of the 3rd period.

8. The referees, timekeepers and any other officials shall be approved and designated by the Kanata Atom Ronald McDonald House Hockey Tournament Committee, or their designate.

9. Each player must be fully equipped in compliance with CHA rules and ODMHA regulations. A BNO certified neck guard, a CSA certified helmet with ear protectors and mouth guards must be worn at all times while on the ice or on the bench. Goaltenders are required to wear BNO certified neck and throat protectors.

10. The tournament permits body checking.

11. A player receiving a match penalty, a major penalty or a misconduct penalty will be subject to the disciplinary action pursuant to the ODMHA Code of Discipline. The Tournament Committee and/or Disciplinary Committee settle all disputes.

12. Players under suspension must serve the suspension in accordance the ODMHA Code of Discipline.

13. The maximum number of players per team is nineteen (19). Players can only play on one (1) team in the tournament.

14. Each team is required to provide a set of home and away sweaters. If the referee determines there is insufficient contrast between the colours of the sweaters, the team designated as ‘home’ will change sweaters.

15. Teams are responsible for the storage and care of their equipment.

16. Each coach and/or manager is solely responsible for the supervision of his or her team before, during and after each game, and inside and outside of the arena. The coach will be held responsible for any damage caused by his or her players.

17. All protests must be submitted in writing to the Tournament Committee within 15 minutes of the completion of the game. All protests must accompanied by $100.00 cash. No protest will be accepted concerning an on-ice official’s call or decision. The decision of the Committee is final. A refund will be given only if the appeal is upheld.

18. The coach and/or manager must report to the tournament registration desk sixty (60) minutes prior to their first game.

19. Players must sign in at the registration desk prior to their first game and prior to all semi-final and championship games.

20. All games consist of three (3) ten (10) minute stop time periods. Flooding will take place between the 2nd and 3rd periods.

21. Teams must be ready to go onto the ice at least 15 minutes before their scheduled game time.

22. Teams have a two (2) minute warm-up from the time both teams step onto the ice.

23. After the two (2) minute warm-up, the buzzer will sound and teams are to line up to shake hands, thereafter returning to their benches with only the starting line-up remaining on the ice.

24. At the conclusion of the game, both teams are to line up on their respective blue lines for presentation of the game’s Hustler Awards. Teams are then asked to return to their respective dressing rooms as quickly as possible.

25. There are to be no ‘exchanges’ made on the ice. Team wishing to exchange pins, etc., must do so off-ice.

26. In the event that a goalie is injured, five (5) minutes will be allowed to dress another goalie if the back-up goalie is not already dressed. A two-minute warm-up will be allowed.

27. If the goal spread is seven (7) or more at anytime during the game, the remainder of the game will be running time.

28. The duration of penalties is as follows:

  • Minor: 2 minutes stop time or 3 minutes running time
  • Major: 5 minutes stop time or 7 minutes running time
  • Misconduct: 10 minutes stop time or 15 minutes running time
  • Fighting: Ejected from the tournament

29. Any verbal abuse of an official will result in an automatic game misconduct.

30. During round robin play, points are awarded as follows:

  • Two (2) points for a win
  • One (1) point for a tie

31. Divisions are divided into groups of four (4) or five (5) teams. The top team of each group advances into the Divisional Playoffs.

32. In case of a tie after round robin play, the following rules will be used to determine the advancing team:

  1. The winner of the game between the two teams
  2. The undefeated team
  3. The team with the highest “goals average”
  4. The team with fewest penalty minutes
  5. The team with the earliest goal in their 1st game

33. In the event that are an odd number of groups within a division, the top team of each group plus one ‘wild card team’ advances. The wild card team is the team with the highest “goals average” among the remaining teams.

34. If two or more teams are tied with the same “goals average”, the team with the fewest penalty minutes shall be declared the winner. If still tied, the team with the earliest goal of their 1st game shall be declared the winner.

35. The “goals average” is calculated by:

goals for / (goals for + goals against).

36. To be eligible to play in the playoffs, a player must have played in at least one (1) round robin game. The only exception is a player serving a suspension. The suspension must be indicated on all previous game sheets.

37. During the playoffs, if a game tied after regulation time, sudden death overtime shall be played.

38. Sudden death shall consist of five (5) minute running time periods using the following rules for the reduction of players:

  • 1st overtime period: no reduction of players
  • 2nd overtime period: one (1) player reduction
  • 3rd overtime period: two (2) player reduction
  • 4th overtime period: three (3) player reduction

39. All additional periods will be played with three (3) players per team until a winner is determined.

40. The duration of penalties during running time is outlined in paragraph 28. If applicable, penalties are carried over to the next overtime period.

41. If a penalty is called while teams are down to three (3) players, a penalty shot shall be awarded against the offending team. If a goal is not scored, play will resume with three (3) players per team.

42. In the championship game, each team is allowed to request one (1) 30-second timeout.

43. If any of these rules are in conflict with the rules of a higher body or if any of these rules are beyond the jurisdiction of Executive Committee of the Kanata Atom Ronald McDonald House Hockey Tournament, the rules and regulations of the higher body will prevail.
